People often get excited about getting organized and use that excitement to do something really fun–go shopping for containers!
However, sometimes it’s really hard to know what you’re going to need until things are sorted out.  Even then, people often underestimate the amount of containers that they’re going to need–and then end up having to take a second trip to the store.
My strategy?
1.  Sort first.
Sort out the items that need storage into piles.
2.  Make a list
Make a list of each category and how many boxes you will need for each category.  Note the sizes of boxes.
3.  Overestimate the amount
Overestimate–trust me.  People usually don’t buy enough containers and end up having to go back and buy more.  If all else fails, you can repurpose extra containers in other areas of your home, or return them to the store.
A lot of times, waiting to buy helps so that you get all the containers at once and they stay uniform.  This doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it definitely helps the overall look of the project, making it more polished.
